From Acknowledgements in Sunshine In A Shady Place:

I wish to thank all those old people who have gone for the lives they lived. Their wisdom, sense of humor, and sensitivity inspired me to try to recreate those long-ago years. My parents, Taylor Lovett Pickren and Madge Bennett Pickren encouraged me to follow my dreams. To my borother, Lovett Bennett "Buzzy" Pickren, and my sister, Rubyedora Pickren Sullivan. I declare you both to have enhanced my life immeasurably not to mention the book. My husband, George, had no idea what he was getting into when he left Minnesota for Georgia. But he has endured with me and the book. I had two early critics who read the first draft. My sister-in-law, Ann Chamberlin of Minneapolis, called me with praise for my efforts and encouraged me to write on. My other sister-in-law, Mary Lula Peagler Pickren, laughed and said, "I feel like I've been visiting Argyle again." Neither lived to see my story become a book. My mother's sister, Mandeline Bennett Morris, belies becoming elderly. At ninety she has maintained that throaty laugh and with a little help could still dance the Charleston. Her help on language and scene was invaluable. A fellow Clinch Countain, Genie Norman, has been encouragement personified. I have used many of her suggestions. A misfortune put me in touch with David Stringer who fine-tuned the manuscript. My son, Will, did part of the retyping. My son Dan, gave me encouragement, as did my grandson, Daniel. Although this book is loosely based on fact, it is just a story.
